Bathroom Remodeling Can Be Kept Simple and Cheap

What do you want from your bathroom?

Do you want it to be more than clinically cold and merely functional? The trend today is towards making bathrooms a warm, friendly place to be, a place where you don't mind spending a fair amount of time in. Lets face it, we all have to use the bathroom sooner or later and it's probably the most used room in the house.

If you are planning to remodel your bathroom you should try to provide an experience for the users of the room and that includes yourself. Try to think beyond the simple utility of being a place to wash in.

How ambitious is your bathroom-remodeling project?

When you remodel your bathroom a lot will depend on how much space you have available and how extensive you want your bathroom remodel to be. When I remodeled my bathroom it all started because I dropped something into the bathtub and cracked it. That meant that the bath had to be replaced but I could have stopped there instead of taking the opportunity to replace everything, rearrange the bathroom and add a shower cubicle. Oh yes and I spent a lot of money too.

You don't have to be that ambitious

As long as your bathroom fittings are in working order you don't need to replace them. There is a lot you can do by adding storage space to get things off the floor, replace some tiling that may have seen better days. Giving the place a simple coat of paint can work wonders also. Even if you do need to replace some items like I did then replacing it with a similar item in the same position can be a lot cheaper than a full blown remodel.

How about a few plants?

If you have the space in your bathroom you might like to add a few pot plants here and there. They can hide the more drab aspects of your bathroom and provide a point of interest for anyone using the room. Some people like to talk to plants but don't like others to know that they do so being alone in a bathroom with some nice plants can be very therapeutic.

Think about the lighting

Lighting can make a big difference and adding some nice warm, soothing light that makes you feel cosy and at home can enhance your experience of the bathroom in a very subtle and pleasant way.

Keep it clean and shiny

Often all a bathroom needs is a good clean. Polish the metal work in the room, the faucets and towel rails etc. Make sure that you remove all the lime scale that has built up over the years. Clean the tiles on the walls so that they gleam like new. Do all this and keep it all clean by going over it once a week. It can make your bathroom look as good as if you'd done a complete bathroom remodel. It's also quicker, a lot less stressful and will save you loads of money.

What to do if you're thinking of a more ambitious bathroom remodel

If you've got plenty of money, time and enthusiasm then you may want to do something a bit more radical than simply clean or paint your bathroom. The article href="http://www.bathroomsremodeling.this-info.com/bathroom-remodeling-idea.php">Bathroom Remodeling Idea - How to get inspiration will give you some inspiration on how to get started on a more ambitious project.

Kitchen Remodeling - Poway Home Remodeling

A custom kitchen is a beautiful thing. However, any kitchen remodeling ideas or kitchen renovation projects need to be well designed and planned before picking up the first tool in earnest! Nothing could be worse than having a horrible "OOPS" moment when you're two thirds of the way through your kitchen improvement work and realize the plumbing for the second sink you were planning is not there yet, but the new wall is already drywalled and painted. Stuff like this sounds pretty basic when you're reading about it, but you'd be surprised how often it happens, including my own experience with a do-it-yourself attempt to remodel a kitchen. Way too embarrassing to tell you about that!

To design your kitchen, you need to plan, plan and plan some more, including lots of sketches of your layouts, many discussions with your spouse or significant other and your kitchen contractor, if you've hired one. Discuss and visualize, over and over again what the new kitchen will look like and how it will function. Each time you do, you're likely to shake out something new to add to your list of kitchen design ideas.

You can design your kitchen or you can hire a contractor, who may or may not have a designer on staff. If you've hired a contractor don't assume he or she will look after everything; they may make assumptions that are not in keeping with your kitchen planning and they certainly won't be as attentive to detail as you are. Be with them all the way in the planning and management of the project, but stay out of the way of the actual hands on work. Nothing will irritate a tradesperson more than a customer's gratuitous suggestions on how to do the work!

The good news is, if you love kitchens and remodeling, really good kitchen designs and construction will add value to your home and improve the wow! factor. Not to mention your own state of mind just walking into a new kitchen renovation made from your own plans.

He strongly suggests a comprehensive kitchen remodeling guide will save you countless dollars and hours of frustration and headaches. Drop me a note for more information - pmollon@sympatico.ca

Bathroom Mirror Cabinets - Things to Keep in Mind

Changing the bathroom mirror cabinets is the simplest way to give a new look of your bathroom. But before you begin the remodeling project it is very important to develop a plan. Your plan should include a detailed layout of the exact cabinet measurements. It should also determine your budget.

Kinds Of Bathroom Vanities

There are a number of mirror cabinets available. You can easily choose from among contemporary styles with flat panel doors, stylish chrome paneled styles with trendy drawers and traditional furniture style cabinets.

Determining The Size Of The Cabinet

Before you select the bathroom mirror cabinets for your home it is very important to list your storage needs. See how many and which kind of cosmetics, grooming, dental care, appliances and cleaning products you need to keep in the cabinet. This would help you determine the size of the wall cabinet.

Take the precise measurements of the wall space where you plan to install the cabinet. Pick up a vanity that provides maximum space and is a few inches smaller that the measured space, at the same time.

Quality Bathroom Mirror Cabinets

While the size of the wall mirrors and the cabinets are very important, it is also essential to pick a quality piece. Most low-end mirror cabinets are just stapled together and hence are not durable. Try and pick a mirror cabinet that looks good and is durable. See if you can get yourself a mirror cabinet that has some dovetailed drawers and concealed hinged doors.

Conclusion
Your ultimate purchase should be to your liking. It should also suit your taste, the dcor of your bathroom and your budget. It would be better to get a bathroom mirror light along with the cabinet.

Use the above information to select the best bathroom mirror cabinets for your home.

The Secrets of Ranch Home Expansions

Many people see a ranch house as an unassuming, single-floor house. As such, ranch owners and will frequently implement extensive landscaping of their yards to make their home look special in a neighborhood full of copycats. Somewhere along the line, however, a homeowner might decide to renovate the interior and begin renovations to make the home more attractive and more functional. If you are a ranch owner looking to update your post-war era home, here are some renovation secrets to help you get started with planning.

In general, a ranch home consists of a kitchen, living area, two to three bedrooms, and one and a half bathrooms. Most are built over a full basement, and it is not uncommon to see a garage built on with a door leading into the kitchen. Implementing ranch renovation project can be as simple as building deck that extends from the back of the home, enclosing a patio area in the front yard, or finishing the basement to create comfortable space where the family can unwind.

As you consider a ranch house project, it is essential that you establish what changes are most important in your opinion and the opinions of others living in the home. Think about your experience in the house, and recall any time you found yourself wishing that something was different or more convenient. Perhaps a cozy enclosed space in the back of the house would make it more "homey," along with a back door that opens to a new patio. If you are thinking about building a space outside to be closer to the outdoors, you have many options. You could install a spacious wooden deck, a covered space with a concrete floor, or even a whole sunroom with a bay window where you could relax and entertain guests.

Perhaps you enjoy the overall look of your ranch house, but in your opinion it is important to expand to get some much-needed space. At some point, you might need more bedrooms, or maybe you need to put in a study or den to add to the common area. If you are considering a plan that will not fit into the home's floor plan, you can always partition off the basement to make new rooms.

The basement is where your essential utilities function, like the furnace, laundry facilities and your hot water tank. If you take the step of building walls around these appliances, the remainder of your basement is free to become a space recreational activities, or family room. In addition, additional dividers could be added to partition the space, creating additional areas that could become bedrooms and study areas for your growing family.

Being especially interested in bay window treatments and decorate bay window, Vince Paxton edited plenty of papers in this specific field. You might come across his abstracts on curtains for bay window at different sources for curtains for bay window knowledge.

Indoor Hot Tubs - Home Tips

Today, hot tubs are more popular than ever and the number of hot tub owners is steadily rising. If you are ready to join this already large group of home owners, you must decide if you would prefer an indoor hot tub or an outdoor. Hot tubs are traditionally found outside, but more and more people are choosing modern indoor versions.

Indoor hot tubs offer many conveniences that cant be found with outdoor tubs. Extra privacy is one popular convenience. Indoor hot tubs eliminate the awkwardness of using the tub in front of neighbors or passersby. This type of hot tub is located in the privacy of your home so it is only viewable to people you are already comfortable with.

Another primary reason many homeowners are now opting for indoor hot tubs rather than outside is the weather. An indoor hot tub can be used year round, regardless of the weather conditions, making an indoor tub perfect for everyday use. The usage of an outdoor hot tub is influenced by the conditions, as well as the season, resulting in a typical loss of three to four months of possible use.

If you plan to purchase an indoor hot tub, you should consider where you will install it and the people who will use it most often. To get the most relaxation from your indoor hot tub, you should place it in an area that is typically calm with little distraction. You should also consider a location that will minimize the mess of water, because an indoor hot tub makes it easier to get out of the tub and walk through the rest of the house before drying off.

Another thing to remember if you are thinking of buying an indoor hot tub is that, although they are more convenient, indoor hot tubs require more complex installations than traditional outdoor ones. Hot tubs produce extreme heat as well as high humidity so your hot tub needs to be placed in a well ventilated area of your home. Too small of a space can cause structural damage to your home, including weakened plaster and condensation that leads to mold and window damage.

A typical hot tub can weigh more than two tons when it is filled, depending on its size, so it is imperative to check the foundation of your home for sturdiness before installing your tub, especially in the room where you plan to install the hot tub. Wherever you decide to install your indoor hot tub, you should reinforce the floor in that room. A standard floor is only designed to support a quarter of the weight of a full hot tub. To allow simple maintenance of your hot tub, you should also ensure that the room you choose can be easily connected to adequate drainage.

Bathroom Tile Installation - 5 Tips For Success

Bathroom tile installation is a great upgrade for any bathroom. Many homeowners tackle this job themselves. It's really not that hard provided you learn about the tricks that you must get right. For example think about these five tricks for bathroom floor tile installing.

A firm foundation.

Floor tile can be installed over all kinds of surfaces. But the one essential needed for a good installation is stability. Often bathroom floors have some water damage and are a little bit spongy. If a floor has any give to it at all, that's a floor that will have cracked tile. There is one sure way to have a solid floor and that's to use cement board as an underlayment for your floor. Be sure to learn about cement board.

Start at the right spot.

Bathrooms are often smaller rooms. You'll be cutting tile to fit on at least two walls. Make sure you start in the center or at one of the walls so the cut tiles are least visible. Nothing looks worse than tile grout lines that are running off at an angle from a wall right in plain sight!

Plumbing done right.

The toilet will have to come up for floor installation. Make sure you're ready to reset the toilet. Have all the hardware on hand. Be sure the mounting bolts are long enough for the new toilet height.

Lots of cuts.

In a small room like a bathroom, you'll get to do quite a few bathroom tile trimming cuts. You'll need your nippers for any curve cuts, like around the toilet. Plus you'll need at least a small tile saw and a tile cutter board is helpful too. None of these tools has to be very expensive. Even light duty tile saws aren't very expensive.

Grout is key.

Grout isn't waterproof. Water slowly seeps through regular masonry grout. So it's a good idea to keep bathroom tile grout well sealed. Also consider using an epoxy grout in a bathroom tile installation. This grout solves the grout leaking problem. But epoxy is highly toxic and not safe to breathe. Get a good mask.

Ceramic bathroom tile is practical and beautiful. With the right information, most anyone can install tile and produce a professional looking job. Just get the few key tricks right and you'll have a great addition to a bathroom.

Handyman Salaries - Home Repairs

A handyman is a person who does odd jobs related to electrical fittings, plumbing, house cleaning, and garden upkeep. Salaries paid to handymen depend on whether they are self-employed or work for a contractor or franchisee. Self-employed handymen are paid on an hourly basis whereas handy men that work for an organization are paid monthly salaries.

Handymen salaries vary from state to state and are usually higher in big cities such as New York, Washington DC, San Francisco, Detroit, Chicago, and others. Handymen salaries also depend on the experience and skills of a handyman, which means that a handyman with more experience and skills will be paid more than a handyman who has lesser experience.

Based on independent salary surveys, the median pay range for self-employed handymen ranges from fifteen to twenty-five dollars an hour. The median salaries are however less than average salaries, which range from twenty to thirty dollars per hour. Handymen that are employed in an organization can get salaries ranging from thirty-five to forty-five thousand dollars, depending on the remuneration policies of the organization. Handyman services firms also pay commission to their employees in case they bring new work opportunities through their own contacts. They may also get bonuses if they complete their work before time.

Handymen normally prefer working for a contractor or other firms as they have plenty of resources for generating work opportunities. Working in an organization is better then being self-employed, as handymen do not have to use their salaries for purchasing tools and equipment, which is provided by the organization.

Individuals who cannot afford the services of a handyman due to their service rates can perform all the tasks done by handymen with the help of do it yourself (DIY) handyman guides available in the market. They can also take help from friends and acquaintances that have done similar type of work.

Childproof Your Bathroom When Remodeling

While renovating a bathroom can get you excited and can be done in a number of ways, the most important thing to consider is safety of your family. Usually, we view things from our own perspective and take care of problems that we might be facing. But if you've got a small kid or are expecting one in the near future, then it's necessary to consider the child's safety too. Else, you would be renovating again and incurring more expenses at the end of the day.

So when you redesign your bathroom, make sure that it will not only be safer for children to use, but will also not pose any problems for adults. The first step should be to put barriers such that your child cannot enter the bathroom without your assistance. You can move the door knob a bit higher so that it goes out of reach for your kid. If you don't want to move the door knob, then you can install a sliding bolt on top, or you can get a doorknob cover that won't allow your kid to open the latch. Make sure that the doorknobs can be opened from the outside even if you child locks himself in accidentally.

Whether inside the bathroom or outside, water is one of those things that can hurt your baby in many ways. But the slippery floor tiles in the bathroom can significantly increase the risk of your child slipping on it, especially if they are wet. So make sure that your bathroom floor is leveled such that water doesn't stay there; it should rather drain quickly even if you spill a bucket full of water. Moreover, the thermostat should be fixed around 115 degrees Fahrenheit so it doesn't burn your baby's skin. You should further test it on your own hands first to be safe.

Another area which parents usually ignore is the faucets around the bath tub. It's pretty easy for your kid to hit them while playing in water. So buy a spout cover for them while you do other shopping for your renovation. If you have got curtains around your shower, don't use long tiebacks that can cause strangulation. And forget walk-in-showers if you are really conscious about your kid's safety. Their glass doors are too much of a risk and can break quite easily, inflicting serious injuries to your child.

Though it might not be common, there's always the chance that your small toddler can fall into the toilet, which is unhygienic at the very least and can even cause drowning. As a solution, you can buy a latch to keep the toilet lid shut. If you place a stool where your kids can stand to brush their teeth and wash their face, make certain that the bottom of the stool is rough, strong and stable.

A typical toilet has many small products that can be pretty harmful for your child, like razors, chemicals, plungers, etc. Have a small closet where you can keep these out of the reach of your children, and make sure you always keep them locked. And take care of naked sockets and electrical outlets using safety plugs and other appropriate measures.

Although it's nearly impossible to make your bathroom 100% safe for kids and adults, taking the above mentioned measures can reduce the chances of a good number of hazards.

How Garage Remodeling Will Fix Your Storage Problems

Garage remodeling is probably the quickest way to add much needed space to your home. If youre considering any sort of home repair this may just be the one that should be first on your list. If youre not using your garage for an area to park your car, then expanding the living space of your home can be quite easily achieved by making this change. As well, youll feel like your home and life are much more organized when you stop storing everything in this area.

If youre thinking of adding a studio, a home office, or a workshop to your home, then of course you need to look no further than the garage. You can even use this area as a home gym, or as an extra living room designated for special events or entertainment purposes. But, dont think that this means that you cannot still store things in this area, or even that you have to sacrifice your parking area. It all really depends on how you go about with your remodeling plans and what your household wants and needs might be.

Since a lot of garages are attached to the house, they can benefit from the exact comfort as the home, which include heating and cooling, phone wiring, as well as plumbing. Youll just need a little imagination, a set budget and a plan.

If you worry that by remodeling your garage, youre losing too much precious storage area, have no fear because you can always build a small storage space behind your garage which can be used to house your tools, sporting equipment, and other items.

Furthermore, when you remodel your garage you should think about adding an addition above your garage. You can add a room for work space and even for living space above the existing garage, which will give you more space as well as increase the your homes value without making major changes to your floor plan.

Do you feel the need to remodel your garage but dont know exactly what you need or want? Then you should consider the following ideas.

How about transforming your garage into a laundry room if youve been performing your laundry duties in the basement. By building a laundry in your garage youll do away with the need to go trounce up and down the stairs a million times a day.

Are you a musician, or just want to be one? A music studio can be a superb choice for your remodeling plans if you or your kids show some talent in this direction. After all, where do you think all of those garage bands got their start? Youll want to consider soundproofing your garage walls so as to avoid your neighbors complaints.

Heres an idea! Change it into a gym. If youve got equipment but you dont have enough space to use it in the house, simply move it into the garage where youll have plenty of space for your daily workouts and. An added benefit is that you wont be bothered by anyone. However you choose to use your new space, hopefully youll enjoy it.

When Plumbing Problems Require Professional Help

Most homeowners who have lived in their house for more than a few years develop the rudimentary plumbing and repair skills necessary to take care of small maintenance jobs. If the toilet clogs or a small leak develops in a pipe, you may take pride in your ability to fix things without the help of a professional plumber. And that's a good thing, too; by taking care of your own small plumbing repairs, you save your family hundreds of dollars, add to the value of your home, and get a sense of satisfaction in knowing that you can maintain your own home.

While completing your own repairs may be a good idea for small plumbing problems, it can actually turn out to be a very bad thing to attempt on significant, serious maintenance jobs in your home. Take, for example, replacing a hot water heater. While some homeowners might have the experience to do this themselves, the vast majority should only rely on a professional plumber to take care of a job this big. For time consuming, in-depth plumbing repair jobs, trying to teach yourself just to save a few bucks could actually end up costing you more in the long run.

The most dangerous situation that could arise from attempting your own large plumbing projects is a possibility of physically harming yourself or a member of your family. While the chances are remote, you should never risk hurting yourselves or your loved ones by attempting to repair or replace a hot water heater, gas line, water line or other large units. Without the proper tools, training and manpower, some of these jobs can end up being much more dangerous than you might think. If there is any doubt in your mind about the safety of a plumbing project, pull out the phone book and call an expert.

A second, less devastating consequence of performing your own plumbing repairs is expensive damage to your property. There are plenty of examples of overzealous homeowners who caused thousands of dollars worth of damage to their property because they didn't want to pay a plumber to fix the problem. Especially when dealing with gas lines, water lines and sewer lines, do not attempt any significant repairs or replacements without first contacting a professional plumbing company.

You should be proud of your ability to repair small plumbing problems that may occur in your home, but don't let stubbornness keep you from calling in a professional for jobs you can't handle alone. No matter how new or well maintained your home is, it will eventually experience a maintenance problem that will require an expert plumber to make a visit. By spending a few dollars now, you could save hundreds or even thousands with a repair job that is much less likely to fail or cause damage to your home.

The walls in the basement are very important because they provide the structure for your basement and carry the weight of your home above it.

Tip 1: Make sure your walls are dry enough to work with.

Check how much moisture content your wall has. If it has too much moisture, there are probably leaks either on the walls itself or on the floor.

Tip 2: Install drywall.

Installing drywall to your concrete walls does not take a genius. It is also more time efficient as compared to applying plaster instead. Drywall is also made out of gypsum that helps prevent the spread of fire. When attaching your drywall, make sure that nothing is protruding on its surface (ex. nails).

Tip 3: Add furring strips

Furring strips will prevent water from leaking in your basement and will provide a more leveled wall to work with. A leveled working surface is very important when you finish a basement.

Tip 4: Insulation and Vapor Barriers

Attaching both of them, will aid in possible heat-related problems in your basement .Insulation is important or less heat loss. It is needed to help maintain a suitable room temperature especially during the cold months.

Tip 5: Design your walls.

The design of your walls is really up to you. You can paint over the surface of the drywall or create a textured finish with the use of wooden boards and other similar materials.
To finish a basement wall is one of the few things you should remember if you want to be able to enjoy your basement longer.

Different Types of Showers

Electric showers have gained more popularity than other types of showers due to its functional superiority. Stored water is not required for operating one. These showers comprise of an inbuilt system, which draws water from an inlet to feed the heating device. However, maintaining equilibrium in water pressure at the inlet is important to achieve maximum benefits from these showers.

Thousands of different shower models have swamped the market these days. Of these, Mira electric showers and the Triton showers stand out due to their added features. Irrespective of the model you prefer, it is of paramount importance that water supply pipes are fixed properly below the surface of the wall or the floor before installation. A separate electric circuit dedicated for the electric shower unit is an additional security feature advised by most designers and architects.

Many new innovations have come about. Standard fixed showerheads are being replaced quickly by the more convenient hand held ones. Large top showers with several sprays placed at different angles to treat different parts of the body at one time are also gaining popularity. These outlets can be activated or deactivated as per requirement.

If you are planning to buy showers for your house, several aspects need to be kept in mind. The heating systems already in place, the plumbing, electric supply lines and connections, the space available in the bathroom and moreover the tastes of the inhabitants should be evaluated. Once installed, these showers can turn bathing into a fulfilling and invigorating experience.

Church Construction

The topic of church construction comes-up at some point in the life cycle of every ministry. Whether you're acquiring or remodeling an existing church or building a new worship facility from the ground up, the process of church construction can be daunting to say the least.

Over the years we have found that ministry staff and their advisors are so focused on the "hard" aspects of construction (financing, land acquisition, permits and entitlements, architectural design, etc.) that they tend to under estimate the value of the softer aspects like the design of their audio and video systems. If you desire to have excellent worship and fellowship, then it's critical that attention be paid to acoustics, audio, lighting, and video systems from the beginning of the church construction process.

One of the major problems plaguing church construction projects is the lack of vendor coordination, communication, and collaboration. There is often a gap in coordination between the design of the sound, lighting and video systems and the installation. Very often one company is selected to perform design work (early in the project) for the architect, and another is selected a year later to install the system. Changes to the electrical, structural and other building systems have often been made by the local building contractors during this time without thought to the impact on the technical systems, because "there was no one to call."

The key to a successful outcome for any church construction process is to have a design-build firm that has sole responsibility for every aspect of the AV system. A good AV design-build firm serves as a single point of contact on all issues ranging from concept, to design, to final installation and training. The design-build firm's designers, engineers, and technicians are involved in your project from day one, exchanging information all along the way, while never losing sight of your ministry's goals and priorities.

Good design-build firms have disciplined project management teams that anticipate and solve problems before they become critical issues. They become an asset to the project by bringing needed expertise at every step along the way insuring that a project is delivered under budget and ahead of schedule.

How to Buy Natural Flooring

Sisal

Sisal is usually suitable for most rooms, except kitchens because food could become caught in the fibres. Not all sisals are water-resistant enough for bathrooms, so check with the manufacturer before buying. Expect to pay between 20 and 70 per sq m.

Suitable for: living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and stairs. Not suitable for: kitchens.

Seagrass

Seagrass is fairly water-resistant, but prolonged damp will cause it to rot, so don't use in a bathroom if it's likely to get soaked daily - for example, in a busy family bathroom. It's also too slippery for stairs. Expect to pay between 10 and 25 per sq m.

Suitable for: living rooms and bedrooms. Not suitable for: kitchens or stairs.

Jute

Jute is made from the stems of a tropical herb. It's soft underfoot but isn't water-resistant and is less hardwearing than sisal or seagrass, so isn't suitable for high-traffic areas. Expect to pay between 14 and 40 per sq m.

Suitable for: bedrooms. Not suitable for: kitchens, bathrooms or stairs.

Coir

Coir is made from coconut husks. It's cheap and very hardwearing, but not water-resistant. It can be used on stairs because its textured surface is non-slip. Expect to pay between 8 and 20 per sq m.

Suitable for: living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and stairs. Not suitable for: kitchens or bathrooms.

Paper

Paper makes a durable floor covering. It's made from softwood pulp, and has added resin to allow the fibre to repel moisture, but it's not water-resistant enough for wet areas. Expect to pay between 50 and 78 per sq m.

Suitable for: living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms. Not suitable for: kitchens, bathrooms or stairs.

Who should fit your floor?

Natural floor coverings usually need to be installed by a professional. Ask your supplier to recommend a fitter, as natural floors are installed in a different way to traditional carpet. Leave your floor covering laid out or loosely rolled in the area where it is to be fitted for a minimum of 48 hours before fitting to allow it to settle. This will ensure there's no buckling or wrinkling of the flooring when it expands, and no shrinkage when it contracts.

The Shape of Steel Buildings is Changing

Yes, the shape of steel and metal buildings is changing. Not so much in size and fundamental shape, but in more dramatic ways, such as design functionality and innovative technology , technology which makes them more user friendly ergonomic and energy efficient..

Today's metal building designs are such one might be inclined to say, that what ever the imagination can conceive in building design, can be accomplished in metal or steel buildings. These new designs are readily available from a multitude of manufacturers.

From simple outbuildings on a farm, to elaborate commercial complexes, steel and metal buildings are the new frontier of modern building construction. These new designs and manufacturing techniques are stepping up to meet and exceed the need of almost every type of building construction imaginable.

Even single family homes which were once almost exclusively built from wood construction methods have found favor in metal. With many new innovations in steel production, metal and steel beam construction is proving to be stronger and more cost effective then ever before. New home construction ideas have literally flooded the steel building industry.

With the technology to make exterior walls resemble those of more traditionally constructed homes by offering even more color choices and design configurations metal homes are ever increasing in popularity. Some companies such as Morton Buildings have their home designs listed on their website. One look at these designs will certainly convince you that the types of construction and design are almost limitless in the home metal building industry.

Because of steel's strength in span and load carrying ability, more and more open expanses in a home setting are possible. The idea that a metal home would be cold, hard and impersonal couldn't be farther from the truth. Although the overall construction is metal and beam construction, the interior fit and finish is in possibly more ways then ever before left up to the imagination of the owner. It can be done in traditional drywall, wood or any other home interior finishing materials.

Many types of metal home construction have concrete floor barriers between upper and lower floors, with traditional subflooring as well. This practice has benefits which can cut sound transfer up to 90% or more. Adding these kinds of innovations, opens up a large variety of choices in the types of heating and air-conditioning a home owner has to pick from , from in floor heating and cooling which is very efferent to more traditional forced air type systems.

Metal and steel construction for homes makes available more types of fit and finish options than conventional construction methods by their ability to be designed into the structure more efficiently then those same options might be in conventional construction.

Recently a metal home construction company took 20 people on a tour of 15 homes. The tour included homes of which half were of metal or steel construction and half were of more traditional wood construction. The homes were of comparable fit finish and size. All tours started on the interior of the home, where all participants were led in blind folded, to obscure which type of home they were in.

After touring the interior of the homes, by an overwhelming margin, those who took part found the fit and finish of the metal homes more pleasing and efficient then those of conventional construction. This is not to mention they usually commented on how sturdy the homes felt. Also, many times they were unable to tell from the inside which type of home they were touring, metal or conventional. You can find full details of this study at metalbuildings-r-us.com

At the end of this experiment, they were all questioned as to which home they would purchase if they had the option to do so. Seventeen out of 20 picked a metal home as the home of choice, especially once they found that, in most instances, the overall cost of constructing metal homes was less on a per square foot basis when compared to conventional construction.

Roofing Options Continued

We previously explored roofing options such as asphalt shingle and ceramic tile, weighing the pros and cons of each. Considering the importance of a well-functioning roof, we will continue the discussion of roofing options here.

Wood shingle is a relatively inexpensive option for roofing. First it might be helpful to distinguish the difference between shakes and shingles.

A shingle is cut with a saw, and has a smoother finish than a shake. Shakes are split, and the wood is more rippled. The rippling in shakes actually encourages water to run down them quickly.

Most often, cedar is the wood of choice for shakes or shingles. This is due to a naturally occurring oil in the wood that discourages rot and bugs, making it far longer lasting than other woods. Shingles and shakes can both be applied over old asphalt or cedar shingles. Shakes require an open sheathing underneath them, so that air can flow and dry any dampness in the shakes themselves. Because of their irregular surface, it is recommended that shakes be layered with a course of felt material, and on solid sheathing, which will fill in any gaps and completely weather-proof.

The only major con to shakes or shingles is that they are not fire-proof. Also, the water collected off them is undrinkable for up to 6 years because of the same volatile oil that deters bugs and rot. After six years, however, it is usable water. Cedar shakes or shingles can last up to 25 years.

Slate is another interesting, and very attractive, option for roofing. Slate's biggest downfall is its high expense. However it is extremely long lasting-a 100 year old slate roof is not uncommon. It is also fire-proof, rot-proof, and a very low maintenance roofing material in general, resistant to acid rain and fading. Also, because it is also all natural, collecting water from your slate roof is very viable.

Metal roofing is probably the most light-weight roofing option. The cost of metal roofing is moderate, about mid-range compared to the other options discussed. It can easily be installed on top of older roofing, and is known for being very low maintenance. Modern metal roofing is usually made of aluminum or a steel alloy. It is then coated with a rust-resistant coating, available in a variety of nice colors. The biggest caution is that this coating is not scraped off during the installation of your metal roof.

Remodeling a Laundry Room - An Easy Five Step Plan

Remodeling a laundry room is fairly easy. This room is often the most overlooked room in the house but in a few simple steps, you can turn it into a functional, organized masterpiece you will be proud to show off.

Here are the five steps to an easy Laundry Room Remodel:

1. Flooring - If you are doing a full remodeling project, you might as well start from the floor up! Tile or vinyl are the best options although laminate or wood floors can be used as well.

2. Cabinets - If you don't already have cabinets in your laundry room, you may want to consider adding them if you have room. Not only will they add storage to your home, but they should increase your home's value.

3. Walls and Dcor - Cute laundry themed art work, whimsical sayings stenciled on the walls, vintage prints, black and whites of your favorite family photographs...just about anything works well as laundry room dcor!

As for paint colors, for smaller rooms you may want to go with soft, light, or neutral colors. Darker colors can make an already small room seem smaller. If you have a large laundry room that is well lit, you could go with a bolder color if you want.

4. Storage/Organization - Make the most of your space and plan your laundry room for optimal storage and organization. If you don't have room for cabinets, at least install a shelf over the washing machine and dryer. A slide out cart that fits between the two appliances is another way to squeeze every bit of available storage space out of the room.

5. Finishing Touches - Window treatments and a nice laundry room rug will help to put the finishing touches on the room.

Remember to look at the overall picture when remodeling your laundry room. All the items you choose for the room should compliment each other.

Visit Laundry-Room-Decor.com for more ideas and tips for remodeling a laundry room including information about great laundry room organizers, cabinets, flooring, dcor ideas, and much more!

How to Fit a Shower

If you are looking to install a new shower in your home, the first steps will be to measure, prepare, and fit the shower. A shower kit will always come with installation instructions, which should be followed to get the best result. Here are a few basic, general guidelines that will help as well. As always when tackling any home improvement project, with or without professional help, ensure that all of your permits are in order before you begin. Shower fitting is not recommended for beginner do-it-yourselfers.

The base of any shower is the shower tray. The shower tray holds the water before it drains, keeping it from spilling out on to the floor. Make absolutely certain that the area is level and that the shower tray will be properly supported. Many shower trays are made of acrylic or resin that can be prone to flexing when not adequately supported. Too much flexing can lead to a break in the seal between the tray and the shower enclosure, causing a leak. Avoid this difficult and expensive problem from the start by taking steps to make sure you have the right kind of supports in the right places.

Make sure you have enough room underneath the shower tray for the drainage pipe to run. Measure carefully to ensure you have enough space for this. If you don't, build your shower floor to be a bit higher to allow the correct amount of space for the drainage pipe and waste trap. Make sure you have access to these things as you install the shower tray, so you can check the seals between the drain of your shower tray and your drain pipe before you close it up.

Before installing anything else, make sure that all walls to be included in the showering area have been well water-proofed. You may choose to use tile or a shower kit with plastic wall panels. Which ever route you choose to take, this is a vital step both in beautifying the shower as well as preventing water damage to your home.

The shower screens will be installed last. A good fit is made from accurate measurements! The type and size of the shower screen panels will depend on the size and shape of the shower tray you've purchased. They should fit together without gaps.

The shower screens, whether purchased separately or as part of a kit, will also have instructions from the manufacturer which should be followed for a solid and lasting result. Check all of your caulking and seals to ensure that everything is watertight.

Current Account Interest Rate - How to Compare Between Its Variations?

A current bank account which is widespread in North America as checking account and cheque account in United Kingdom, is actually designed to provide frequent funds transfer facility. This is one type of deposit account that can be opened with a bank or any financial institutions to safe, fast access of money on demand and within shorter period. Funds can be transferred via various means as per terms and facilities available with the banks or institutions the account is held with. Since, account holders can withdraw money of any amount and there are no regulations regarding fixed number of time the account holder can access their money from the account. As long as balance is remaining in the account, customers can withdraw as per their requisitions. Also there is no hard and fast regulations regarding the amount for opening such bank account. These accounts are basically meant for providing convenient transaction of money on needs for business people, companies or firms or any public enterprises. They are advised to maintain this account to make frequent cash transactions in a single day. Hence, these accounts are not intended for savings of money or gain of interests. The current account interest rate is defined as Annual Equivalent rate or AER, in short. Before you approach to open a current account, get to know what an annual equivalent rate is and how it works.

The current accounts pay customers with current account interest rate or AER. This rate refers what the amount would culminate into if customers were needed to be paid once in every year. Higher this annual equivalent rates rise, more amount of interests the customers will earn on their remaining credit in the account. The AER works in the same manner as the overdraft does with the little difference that is money through AER gets deducted than to be credited.

Some customers inquires whether a current account interest rate may change over a stipulated period of time and that too without receiving any notice from banks or the institution it is held with. Yes, interest rates of current account are likely to be altered. However, the account provider sends notices detailing the effects before and after changing of interest rates. Before you take any decision regarding opening a current account or continuing the account when changes are made interest rates, you should tally the rates. Customers can take a advantageous decision when they compare the rates when the credit is remaining and when you have withdrawn from the account. The current account interest rate having high rates on credit and low interest rates on overdrawn of amount is the most viable combination customers should go for.

Customers should note there are some variations in current account interest rate. One type is interest rates on disarranged borrowing that banks charge when customers exceed the agreed limit of overdraft. On exceeding this pre-determined limit for overdraft, customers are charged with unauthorised borrowing which result in high interest rates on them. There are also those current accounts that feature tiered interest rates which work as per the money remaining in the balance of current account.

Many of us get into fix whether opening a current account or savings account will be a wise decision. If you have definite goal of saving money for coming future, opt for savings account, especially those high interest saving accounts. When you are planning to accumulate enormous amount of money over a period, then high interest saving accounts are the right options. For example, if you want to save money for children's educational purposes, property purchase or building homes, keep abreast the idea of these high interest saving accounts. These accounts feature much higher rates of interests than standard accounts for which customers need to pay almost nothing. On the contrary, people invest a large amount for opening high interest saving account which can be up to 5 percent or even better.

Characteristics of an Effective Undercounter Water Filter

An effective under counter water filter can cost as much as $800. But, you can buy under counter water filters that are just as effective for less than $200. You just have to look for a product that does not include a reverse osmosis step.

Reverse osmosis or RO was originally designed for large industries and public treatment facilities. Eventually, it found its way into homes having brackish wells, as it was the only method to reduce the sodium content.

Today, companies like GE are producing less expensive "trimmed down" versions of the original designs for use in homes with publicly treated supplies. Now, some companies have gotten the bright idea that RO is a good idea for an under counter water filter. At one time, it was the only effective way to insure cyst removal, but that is no longer the case.

Under counter water filters with a submicron particle-filter can remove more than 99% of all cysts, for a fraction of the cost. Ion exchange can be used to reduce sodium content for brackish wells. In under counter water filters, it is used to remove lead, copper and other metallic traces.

Lead, even at low levels, is bad for your long-term health. Copper simply spoils the taste. Minerals and electrolytes, on the other hand are good for your health.

If an under counter water filter includes a reverse osmosis step, it will spoil any naturally occurring mineral-content. Ion exchange "balances" the mineral content to get rid of hard-water problems, but will not affect a naturally occurring mineral content.

The $800 under counter water filters requires extensive maintenance, regular cleaning and replacement of three different cartridges at various times throughout the year. The brand that sells for less than $200 requires no maintenance other than replacing the dual cartridges every six months.

It comes with an installation kit and is relatively easy to install. The faucet can simply replace your sprayer or you can drill an additional hole in your sink. There are good, bad and mediocre products on the market. I would not buy from a company that does not provide complete product performance data.

I would suggest that you look for an under counter water filter that is certified by the California State Department of Health. To get that certification, a company must provide complete testing data from an independent laboratory, such as Underwriter's.

The National Sanitation Foundation will also provide certifications for companies that apply. Consumer Reports rates products annually and some under counter water filters receive the highest ratings.

Not too many companies make an under-the-counter system. So, that makes shopping a little easier. Now, that you know that you do not have to spend $800, you might also want to consider a showerhead system. Cancer-causing chemicals become airborne in the shower and chlorine vapors trigger asthma attacks. It's also bad for your skin and hair.

Hopefully, this information will help you find an effective under counter water filter and save money, too!

American Inventor TV Show - Try These Inventions

When I saw the "American Inventor" program, I immediately loved the show. It's a parade of ingenuity - and sometimes silliness and total ignorance of markets. Watching some of the inventors come onto that stage, I realized I wouldn't want to be a judge on the show for anything. The judges face the constant choice of either giving false hope or destroying dozens of people's hope each night.

For those of you who haven't seen the show, it is essentially a bunch of amateur inventors demonstrating their inventions and ideas in front of a panel of judges (it's on ABC). Each of the four judges say either yes, and the inventor goes to the next round, or no, and he or she doesn't. The "no" votes are a lot more common than the "yes", especially with the many inventors of new kinds of toilets.

Now, apart from avoiding more toilet inventions, what can you do to improve your odds of making it to the next round on American Inventor? Three quick tips:

1. Be Really Ready! You'll have so very little time to demonstrate your idea or invention, so be prepared to say and show everything in a couple minutes.

2. Show It In Action! A builder with a new form of construction blocks (think full-sized homes made of locking plastic blocks) almost lost out because he was talking about the idea and showing blueprints. He almost had to beg for the third "yes" vote to move on. What should he have done? Walk into that room and start building with the blocks, and then say, "This is how we'll soon be building homes." This approach would get their attention.

3. Prepare Facts And Statistics. Many inventions have lost out because the judges thought their was no market for them. Why did they think this? It seems that two of the judges (you need three "yes" votes) have never ridden a bicycle or done yard work. Naturally they don't know that a device for hanging bicycles or an easily-turned lawn mower would sell. Give them the stats: "More than one million people hang their bikes in garages and sheds from dangerous old-fashioned hooks. This is the better alternative..."

Two Inventions To Take On American Inventor

Hey, I don't want to be the guy who spends $20,000 and four years to create a prototype that gets voted down in two minutes flat. I just like dreaming up the ideas. Therefore, here are two ideas which I won't be making into new inventions, and are free for you to develop and patent.

The Talking Pet. Imagine four colored circular pads on a floor mat. Your dog steps on the blue pad and a speaker says "I want to go outside now." He steps on the yellow one and you hear, "I'm hungry now; please feed me." The red one? "Can you please give me some water?" I leave the last pad up to you. This will take some training, but then the average dogs quickly learns to come and get you for a trip outside, so it can learn this.

The Super-Sanitary Toilet. They'll hate you for this one, but have you ever seen how much fine mist goes up in the air when you flush? This explains the fecal coliform bacteria found on everything tested (including your toothbrush) in the average bathroom. Show this and the American Inventor judges will be ready for your solution: A toilet that automatically flushes when you close the lid - and only when you close the lid. This keeps the bacterial-mist from getting up in the air and all over.

Remodeling Your Bathroom For Your Health

You might be cleaning your bathroom on a regular basis, scrubbing the bathroom tiles and the toilet bowl, as well as wiping down the shower and changing the towels regularly, but are you doing enough? The motivation for contemporary bathroom might not be about creating a modern style, but rather making sure that your bathroom is clean and healthy to use. In order to keep you and your family safe, here are some bathroom remodeling tips you need to use.

What is lurking in your bathroom?

One of the biggest problems in the bathroom is bacteria and this makes sense given the fact that you use the bathroom for germ filled activities, using the toilet and cleaning off your body. However, these bacteria do not normally cause problems for healthy adults when you clean regularly. If you have someone in your home that might be more sensitive to these kinds of germs, you can start a contemporary bathroom remodeling project that includes surfaces that are easier to clean, i.e. flat surfaces and metals, so that germs cannot congregate. Black mold can be much trickier to find, residing in the walls and underneath bathroom tiles, so there is more work to be done for that kind of grime.

Battling mold with a remodel

When you suspect that you have mold in your bathroom, the first thing you will want to do is call in someone to test your speculation. A mold testing professional will come out to your house to see just how many spores are in your bathroom and whether or not you need to hire someone to remove the mold or you can remove it yourself. If you are able to remove it yourself, you will want to get rid of all of the items that are infested with the mold, fixtures, wall pieces, cabinets, bathroom tiles, etc. This will get your bathroom off to a clean start. If you cannot remove a particular item, you can clean it down with a bleach solution or as recommended by the tester or other professional. In this remodel, you will also want to install a high quality bathroom fan that will keep the air from being moist and allowing mold to grow in these conditions.

Other tips for remodeling for health

Those with allergies will need certain help from your contemporary bathroom remodeling project. Those with allergies to dust and mold will need the bathroom to be easy to clean. Surfaces need to be flat and smooth, without any cracks or crevices that might harbor dirt or allergens. If you currently have bathroom tiles, these will probably need to be removed and replaced with a flat tiling setup. Those with immune system problems will need surfaces to be made from anti-bacterial materials, which are expensive, but worth the additional costs. The biggest concern is simply the regular use of a good, high quality bathroom fan. This fan should be used during any showers or baths and then be run for at least thirty minutes after the bath has ended. The fan should be cleaned on a monthly basis, if not more regularly. You might also want to look into HEPA air filters for your bathroom, if severe allergies are an issue.

Your bathroom is always going to be a popular room in your house, but when you plan a contemporary bathroom remodeling project with health in mind, it will be the safest room in the house as well.

Remodeling Your Home For Resale

It is true that remodeled kitchens provide a good return when selling your home, but such a project is very involved, costly, and often a headache. Instead of a complete overhaul, give your kitchen a fresh appearance by installing new appliances and replacing outdated cabinet hardware with trendy pieces.

Another simple improvement to your kitchen includes changing faucets and light fixtures. Freshen up bathrooms in the same manner as the kitchen. Change hardware pieces such as faucets, towel bars, soap dishes, as well as light fixtures. Also think about updating your mirror and other accessories in the room such as shower curtain, wall hangings, and towels.

Fixing up the yard will add significant curb appeal and is one of the most worthwhile improvements you can do for your home. Curb appeal refers to the view of your home from the street. Because the outside of your house is the first thing the buyer sees, the yard and entry leave a strong impression and help the buyer decide whether they even want to see the rest of the house.

So go out to your curb and look at your house; does it look nice? Can you even see it? If you have large trees or shrubs that cover the majority of the house, cut them back or get rid of them to increase your curb appeal. Make sure the yard is neat and trimmed and for a small investment you can put together a beautiful flower bed or adorn the entry with beautiful potted arrangements.

Also, consider improving the entry way by installing new trendy porch lights and a new mailbox. If necessary, give your home a fresh coat of paint. All of these improvements are relatively inexpensive but make a big difference when it comes to selling your home.

When it comes to carpet, first check to see if there are hardwood floors underneath by lifting up a corner in a closet. If there are hardwood floors, just have the carpets well cleaned and advertise that there are original hardwood floors.

More buyers are attracted to wood floors these days. If there is not wood below and the carpets are old, have the carpets replaced. New carpets give your home both the smell and look of newness.

Seriously consider painting the entire interior of your home, especially if it hasn't been done in a while. When you are repainting, choose light neutral colors. Although dark or bright colors may be trendy and look nice, they limit the buyers' ability to picture the home as their own. A light and neutral color will clean up the walls without turning off any customer.

Although you may love your neon beer sign in your living room, some buyers may not and can be turned off by such personal items. Try to make your house more generic and hide your quirky belongings; try to make it look like a model home. It helps the buyer picture their own belongings on the wall.

Keep your house clean. This costs nothing but makes all the difference. No one wants to pay a good price for a cluttered and dirty house. If you are a pack rat, now is the time to change the habit and throw it all away or invest in a storage unit to place all your junk. Avoid a cluttered look and make sure everything has a place and is put away.

These small improvements will make a big difference and will give you the best opportunity to sell your home quickly and for the best price.

A good looking home can fetch you a good price. You could give your kitchen a fresh appearance by replacing outdated cabinet hardware without spending too much on complete kitchen remodeling Sarasota homes can look renovated with simple ideas too. Visit http://www.eurotechcabinetry.com.

Feng Shui - The Original Green Lifestyle

Renewable or sustainable energy, climate change and environmental pollution are in the headlines daily. Are you considering a shift to a greener lifestyle and making changes in your home to bring it into more harmony with the environment? Is it time to take action on your thoughts? Should you invest in a green lifestyle and eco-friendly products?

Whether you agree or disagree with everything you hear and read about the greening of America, you can definitely agree upon the fact that a lot of time, money and effort is being dedicated to this endeavor.

Defining a Green Lifestyle

I am sure that every person has their own definition of the greening of America and what living a green lifestyle would look like. And, sometimes those definitions are vastly different and totally at opposite ends of the spectrum. My rather simplistic definition of a green lifestyle is: people who support and replenish their environment and an environment that supports people through providing life giving atmosphere and resources in order that they both can flourish.

The second way I could describe a green lifestyle would be to live a Feng Shui lifestyle. The original Form School of Feng Shui is all about creating your home and life to be in complete harmony with your surrounding environment.

If you think about it, Planet Earth some 3000 years ago was in perfect balance. To be somewhat simplistic, Earth experienced day and night, heat and cold, wet and dry over a yearly cycle. It had oceans and land masses, mountains and valleys, barren land and crop supporting land. The earliest civilizations learned to work with their environment and to manage the resources.

The Ancient Chinese civilizations lived in harmony with their environment. They altered their environment by cultivating the land and building homes so as to survive. But when they learned to position their homes in harmony with the energy forms provided by the environment such as trees, hills, rivers and sunshine as noted in the Form School of Feng Shui they began to thrive.

Feng Shui Tips for a Greener Lifestyle

Since we cannot turn the clock back 3000 years nor do most of us wish to, there are a number of things we can do today, right now to live in better harmony with our environment. Rather than think about the environment from a global perspective which is out of reach for most of us, look around your home to find those things which are within your reach, you can control and do something about right now.

Recycle everything. Most people recycle the obvious such as bottles, plastic items, bags, newspapers, boxes and the like but take a closer look at things like electronic equipment, cell phones, computers, tools, books and appliances. Many areas now offer places to drop off electronic items and libraries love to receive new books that have been read only once. See what is available in your area.

Donate all useable clothing and household items to charitable organizations so they can be recycled to those in need.

Check in with local organizations like those dealing with domestic violence to see what items they regularly need that you may be ready to part with. Keep that list handy for future use and to share with others.

Remove your name from as many catalogue and flier mailing lists as possible to reduce the amount of printed mail you receive and toss. If you like certain catalogues but are receiving duplicates be sure to notify them to remove the extra name from the list. Encourage all of the catalogue companies you purchase from to print on recyclable paper.

Use canvas, cloth or mesh shopping bags to bring home your groceries. This will lower the number of plastic bags clogging up the environment plus save on the use of petroleum to manufacture them.

Get in the habit of using old towels as rags for some of those simple cleanups and spills throughout the house and garage instead of grabbing for the nearest paper towels. Old towels are easily recycled by simply washing and disinfecting them whereas paper towels add to landfills.

Use as many eco-friendly soaps, detergents and cleaning supplies as you can find. They are better for you to use because they are less toxic and are better for the environment because they are bio-degradable.

There are easily thousands of other things you can do and products you can buy that lend themselves to a greener lifestyle. However, you may have a question at this point, what does all this have to do with Feng Shui.

It has everything to do with Feng Shui. First many of the suggestions above are about clearing the clutter out of your personal environment which provides you better energy. Second, you've recycled a lot of your stuff which provides the environment more positive energy rather than having to deal with more waste. Third, you've improved your quality of life and that of the environment by using more eco-friendly products.

When it comes to the environment, everything you say, think and especially do, does matter.

The Best Type of Replacement Windows

If you are looking for the best type of replacement windows then you have come to the right place. I will provide you with very useful information that you can use to make the right decision as you start your window replacement project.

There are many ways of approaching this question of the best type of replacement windows. I will try and cover all the important aspects of it. That is, the best brands, best type in terms of make and functionality. Read it before you get scammed by an unscrupulous sales rep.

Energy efficient windows

If you are looking for the windows that will save you thousands on bills then your best type should be one that does a good job at energy saving. There are many brands like Amerimax but the best way to find one that will work for you is to use ratings. The best rating methods that are available today are the NFCR and the Energy star rating.

Durability

If you are planning to stay in that house for a long time then you probably are thinking about finding the best type of replacement windows that are durable. Well there are many brands that feature here - a few that comes to mind include Pella, Andersons, milgard to name a few. In previous articles I have written about top brands in terms if durability.

Storm Windows

To find the best type of windows that resist wind you need to find AAMA air infiltration rating or NFRC, which I highlighted earlier on. So if you are looking for the best type of storm replacement windows then think along wooden windows because they can easily be repaired.

Vinyl storm windows tend to get messed up pretty quickly. They then start leaking and get an ugly look that cheapens the house. Of course there are other options to explore here. Brands to consider here include Hurd, Marvin or Amerimax to name just a few.

Part of the house

Different windows work are good for different parts of the house. For example when talking about the best type of kitchen replacement windows then you need to think along casement windows. This is because kitchen windows must be airy. For the lounge you may need to consider bay windows and you can get yourself Milgard Vinyl for the back areas of the house

You also need to consider the best type of replacement windows that work well when cleaning e.g. tilt-in, double hung and if you want to take out the sashes and frames then your best type may be a full frame replacement window.

My point here is that "best" is different from one person to the next. As an expert I would recommend that you get in touch with a consultant to help you find the one suitable for you. It is easy to find help online without being charged anything.

The Value of Concrete Countertops

Customization Increases Aesthetic Appeal and Real Estate Investment for Homeowners

From top-dollar homes in the San Francisco Bay Area to sprawling mountain homes in the Colorado Rockies, discriminating homeowners are demanding custom designs and finishes in their kitchens. In particular, they are looking to express their individuality and distinct design preferences with the fast-growing design material of choice concrete.

In fact, concrete countertops have become somewhat of a
status symbol for kitchens, rivaling granite and other high-
end countertop surface options. Consumer Reports Magazine
(August 2004) ranked concrete highest for its customization and exclusivity among high-end kitchen countertops.

As a custom product, the amount of time and craftsmanship required to produce concrete countertops places them as the most labor-intensive and priciest among leading countertop materials.
However, concrete countertops are becoming more accessible for those on a modest budget. The latest do-it-yourself (DIY) trend to captivate homeowners and builders is building your own concrete countertop. This phenomenon has gained popularity largely due to Chengs best-selling book Concrete Countertops: Design, Forms, and Finishes for the New Kitchen and Bath (Taunton Press, 2002). According to Cheng, there is little monetary investment in making concrete countertops, yet the creative gains of working with concrete are plentiful.

THE SHOWSTOPPER

Increasingly, homeowners are moving away from the monotonous, manufactured look of traditional countertop surfaces and choosing concrete for its earthy, timeless appeal. Plus, the options for personalizing concrete countertops are endless: one can color, polish, stamp and stain concrete or imbed personal objects like stones, seashells and fossils into the countertops surface, adding sentiment and character. Functional features such as drain boards, soap dishes, and trivets can also be incorporated to suit the homeowners own needs and lifestyle.

Concrete is slowly becoming demystified as characteristically cold and industrial. In contrary, this age-old material is warm and surprisingly tactile; people cannot help but touch their smooth, polished surfaces. Real estate agent Joy Rasmussen, who has recently sold her mountain home a short-term investment property in Steamboat Springs, CO recounts her visitors experiences with concrete: When I had open houses, visitors gravitated to the concrete countertops many people around here have never seen them.

Joys 2,265 sq. ft. mountain home was custom build by her husband, Ken Otterman, along with KJ Otterman, president of Classic Special Custom Homes. They built pour-in-place concrete counters for the homes kitchen and three bathrooms by using Concrete Countertops as their guide. The sand-colored concrete countertops were polished smooth, then paired with natural slate of varying colors like charcoal, rust and gold tones that forms the backsplashes in the kitchen and baths. As a design accent, small rectangular slate tiles were added to
the rim of the bathroom sinks, which provided a unique detail to the custom vanities.

When Joy and Ken decided to sell their house, their investment in concrete countertops proved its value. We were able to list the house $20,000 over market value, and had no problems selling it, comments Joy, while discussing the long list of upgrades throughout their house, including knotty pine solid doors, natural slate wall accents and hardwood floors. The concrete countertops were easily the most unique and impressive of all the finishes. I believe they were a huge part in

adding value to the home. Around here, all you see in homes are granite countertops and I really think homebuyers are getting quite numb with granite.

Concrete countertops are a unique offering to homebuyers who see the same finishes used in house after house they visit, explains Joy, offering her observation as a seasoned realtor. Having concrete countertops almost gives you bragging rights you have something different from your neighbors.

BREAKING THE MOLD

Another advantage of concrete is its adaptability in either modern or traditional settings, especially when coupled with other materials like varied metals, wood or stone. Concrete adds so many [possibilities] to stone, and the combination with slate, which is hugely popular here, gives the mountain homes an overall warm, natural touch, says Joy.

Joy and Ken have since built a much larger home (4,000 sq. ft.) that offers expansive views of the Steamboat Ski Resort and is meant to serve as a long-term investment for the couple. Theyve also expanded their list of custom finishes, including hand-troweled walls, elegant oil-rubbed bronze hardware, knotty pine doors that arch at the top, cabinets in a natural, knotty alder, and their favorite concrete kitchen countertops.

Unlike in their previous home, KJ and his specialty crew poured charcoal-colored countertops using the pre-cast method in the unfinished basement of the new home. Before pouring the concrete, they sprinkled an array of semi-precious stones in the mold including Leopardskin, Moonstone, Mother-of-Pearl and Turquoise. After the surface was ground and lightly polished, the finished result was an impressive blend of colors, By far, the Mother-of-Pearl was the most incredible, says Joy.

The L-shaped concrete countertop has a rough, rustic stone appearance, complementing its rugged country surroundings. An integral drain board and trivets provides function and added interest to the concrete countertop. Natural slate backsplashes, distinct wall accents, and a butcher block countertop at the kitchen island all resonate with the traditional warmth and earthiness of the concrete countertops.

Joy and Kens respective backgrounds in real estate and custom homebuilding, and as investment homebuyers, have helped them realize that concrete countertops can add tremendous aesthetic and financial value to a home. Concretes customization and show-stopping appeal is like no other countertop surface. Cheng is a proponent of emotional aesthetics and building homes that capture these emotions, as in the case of Joy and Ken Otterman. Cheng concludes: People really want differentiation, something personal, something custom and concrete can do that for them.
